Abstract

Historical research into demography of the Basque Country has reached a level that is inversely proportional to the scant recognition that it receives. In wide sectors of our historiography it has been considered basically as a support of supposedly more important historical analyses such as economic or social analyses. Vargas Ponze shared this conviction in part. If it is true that he saw “the true measure of a society in its population”, it is also true that he did research into the demography of Guipúzcoa in the 18 th century with a clear political objective in mind – protoliberal uniformism.
