Critical approach to the evolution of historical references in order to define THE AMATEUR BASQUE THEATRE

Abstract

• Amateur theater has played a significant role in the history of Basque thea-
  tre. It has always been a way to work collectively for the countrymen. However,
  as the twentieth century has witnessed a lot of changes in the way to do theatre,
  the concept of amateur has taken on different meanings in just a few years.
  These include tendencies to associate amateurism with hobby, will and patrio-
  tism; and there are, on the other hand, conflicting opinions arising from the
  professional versus amateur dichotomy, used to define poor quality theatre. This
  article brings together historical references to know and understand the trajec-
  tory of Basque amateur theatre: data, attitudes and discussions among different
  etiquettes.
