Abstract

Until 1745, and even later, the literary works in Basque were predominantly
of a religious nature, and this area was not very suitable for the
reproduction of insults. But, though occasionally, we may fi nd them in other
sources, especially in criminal cases arising from insults. Several authors
have rescued numerous Basque expletives from the archives of the Basque
Country. Due to the variety of authors and the dispersion of the works that
have received these insults, we have rehearsed about 200 Basque alphabetical
dictionaries to group them together. These dictionaries originated from
periods known as the Archaic Euskara (1400-1600) and the Old and Classical
Euskara (1600-1745).
