Abstract

In 1964, when Michelena collected all short texts in Basque known at
the time in his collection Textos arcaicos vascos, he did not appear to pay
much attention to the curious similarity that some of them bear to each other
in being set in Mexico City in the late 17th century. We have sought to outline
the possibility that this collection of stories in the Basque language was not
without purpose, and that the creation of the Hermandad (later Cofradía)
de Aránzazu in 1681, which brought together Basques and Navarrans in the
capital of New Spain, helped to reaffi rm their identity and appreciation of
their mother tongue.
