La marinería vasca en las grandes gestas de Elkano

Abstract

This article looks at the Basque mariners —particularly those from Gipuzkoa— who collaborated with Juan Sebastián de Elkano in the two long voyages undertaken by this exceptional sailor from Getaria: the fi rst, his celebrated circumnavigation of the globe; the second, to the Spice Islands, where he would meet his end. The article describes the identity and origin of his crew and compiles other details and circumstances about this main figure of interest, related both to his family circle and to his closest collaborators, among them Juan de Elorriaga and Martín Iñíguez de Karkizano from Elgoibar.
